Project Description The objective of this project is to understand the fundamental spatial-temporal relationship of large earthquakes on oceanic transform faults, where is an ideal place to study earthquakes. Graduate student Lingchao He will use UNITY to build and run a numerical model with well understood physics to simulate earthquakes. One of the innovative aspect of this project is using additional physics that were ignored before. The effort will attempt to answer several fundamental questions related to earthquake cycles and shed new light on how earthquakes operate on faults. The results will be used as preliminary results for a NSF proposal.

This is the first time the model would be adapted to execute on the new UNITY HPC cluster – the student is expected to spend considerable effort on accomplishing that and finding the optimal settings for performance on that new machine.
